yieah. move along, move along.

wednesday - 13th ... preview night

a looooong drive, followed by bathroom problems, followed by crashing on a mattress, followed by making fun of people, followed by food court at horton plaza, followed by more making fun of people, followed by collecting of loot, followed by dinner at the wyndham. the day was capped off with a meandering search through the gaslamp quarter for a good bar.

of course, that one simple paragraph doesn't detail the level of snarkery that went on, nor the gush of fanboy excitement upon discovering The Best Loot Ever, and it definitely misses the collective geek amusement at the persistence of that one guy who was so into our private dinner conversation that he just had to join in. lunch with timmah at horton was fun. hugging clone-wars yoda was also pretty ooo-la-la.

those were the highlights. it's been several months, i don't remember it all. i think the pictures speak plenty though. :)

while waiting in line to get my badge, i did discover that i had mahjong on my cell phone. since then, that game's been my lifesaver when in a good-god-this-line-is-moving-so-damn-slowly crisis.

the living accomodations of this trip were generously provided by brian "darth" maul. upset him and he just might unleash solar turbines on your unsuspecting person.

picking up badges in the sail pavillion. crowds waiting around to get inside the ginormous dealer's hall.
horton plaza. different view from last year.
a pekkle tile in the sanrio store. like, totally.
the characters outside the sanrio store...
...armed with spiky mohawks. wtf?!
snapping a pic of my badge while waiting around to get inside the hall.
artsy shot of the info poster thingies they always display outside the hall doors.

Attack of the Toys...

starring harry smokes pooter head.

from the fourth movie currently being filmed. you can see my hands reflected, unfortunately.
mer person.
snivellus snape. whatta hottie.

assaj ventress. she was on the flip side of the previous yoder pic. cool lookin' eh.

misc star wars ...

i will never get enough of these guys. duh.

smart-ass comment about to burst forth.
trachea-crushing imminent.
tie-fighter. unpainted but still fabulous.
your little green friend is now armed with force-clawing action.
this year they had the clone-wars yoda statue at eye level so i snuck in a couple close-ups. here's an Extreme Close-Up as a wallpaper.
last year they only had one of these things with yoda on it. this year, both anakin and obiwan guarded one of the entrances to the star wars pavillion. also, view of the panel's size with scale reference. (a minru production)
obiwan with the sexier ep3 haircut. (down with mullets dammit.)
beyond nerdy.
the real metal thing.
life day christmas with yoda. this actually looks sorta freaky.
what is there left to say, i ask you...
close-up of yoda-as-stocking.
the po'-folk's version of a star wars christmas stocking.
not star wars, but this is just about the cutest thing EVER.

lego star wars ...

lego-style whiny-kin skywalker guarding the booth entrance.
wow.
sorry for the fuzzy pic. but all those different colors made for a bizarre looking wookie anyway.
this thing was massive. the guy's in the pic for a sense of scale.
artsy dutch-style view. and minru's straight-foward full-view snapshot.
view-port on the side of the ship. the figures present at the meeting make for some interesting continuity issues. do you even care?? also, a close-up of the brick detail.
the domed display above the star destroyer. also, minru's much better view of the dome version 1 and version 2.
there ya go.
see the blue clear bricks? yieah, i know.
other pretties, my pretty ...
...see? ain't she pretty.
he was inside a gumball machine. cute.
savvvy yo ho...AND REALLY BAD EGGS.
feffy-roth in advent children style...
...about to rip cloud a new one.
feffy-roth in ff7 game style.
i just...i couldn't...this is awesome.
at the end of the day ...

some bizzarre sticker graffiti thingie on the side of a large dumpster.
new orleans. sorta kinda not really.

thursday - 14th ... con opening day

lunch at downtown karl strauss (there is no way in hell i'll be going back to the main restaurant...not for several years anyway). mainly just wandered around for most of the day. i think. (damn the infirm memory capacity of the elderly!!)

there was a lot of wandering around from booth to booth...in search of certain artists (andrew bell!!) or trying to sneak in more freebies than your allotted share. also quite a bit of running around trying to get in line and pick this item up for that person. the battle scene writing panel with robert jordan was this morning and i'd accidentally entered the room early enough to catch the tail end of the margaret weis panel. she's super fab. robert jordan? somewhat full of himself (obviously well-fed ego the man's got there). nevertheless, interesting talks all around. the lady sitting next to me took serious notes during the battle scene panel. sometimes i forget that we're not all attending these cons on a pure fanboy capacity.

accosted andrew bell at the dumbrella booth and got him to draw wrigglies on his new book (which i bought). found some new toy obessions: nanospore (SPORES!! SPORES!!) and unkl brand ning nongs. adorable thingies.

had only two and a half beers for lunch but felt the effects way into the evening. got sick half-way into the dear friends nobuo uematsu concert and had to take a couple aspirin (thanks for always being prepared minru!!). slept through a few songs (dammit!!) but the concert was worth the ticket price and the sitting on cold grass right next to the freezing ocean breezes. uematsu's final fantasy soundtracks are that incredible...a bit of music from practically all the games, a symphonized version of the chocobo song (people sang aloud to that one), and a double encore of one-winged angel (yay!!!).

the con center looked plenty deserted after the concert...i kinda liked that. never saw the place without it being jam-packed so it was nice to actually see the space for itself. there was a still a lot of evening programming going on though (movies and the such) but we were tired kids and decided to go back to brian darth maul's. which was equally all good because then we sat around his garage watching him fix surfboards and talking about this and that and a whole lotta other stuff.

a view of the slowly burgeoning crowd from the height of the second floor. looking up at the half-dome glass enclosure of the main stairwell at the con center.
in years prior, it's been darth pikachus and darth jarjars galore. and now? why, it's Dark Jedi Jack. there was also a mini-Jack wandering around with him but i didn't get a pic of them together.
my plate, some beer samples, and someone's unfinished stargazer thingie from our lunch at karl strauss in downtown.
better pics of the glass sculpture in front of the emerald wyndham.
purty. last year's pic sucked.
this is a massive in-joke. this guy kept turning up after wednesday night's dinner.
sdcc logo as a massive doormat.

wandering 'round the con floor ...

where crazies abound.

it's the purple guy. again. bizarre but cute.
the gate. with glowy chevrons.
donald. cute!
why in the world do all superheroes gotta work at a newspaper anyway.
this statue was around last year too.
i love that bird-lizard thing obi-wan rides.
no dome. and no little man inside either.
a great lookin' jedi guy.
a wannabe anakin mannequin. they was giving away the robe and costume as part of a raffle.
i like his orange visor.
i asked the guy to give me a thumbs up and he did. now they're set to be in troops.
more of the yoder.
same statue as above but now with some sorta force lightning effect going on (yieah okay dammit, it's just a fortuitously placed spotlight).
the kotobukiya people are so detailed. they've even got his mole down.
my self-portrait.
the grandest moff of them all.
squeaky shiny sandtrooper.
there aren't enough rhinestones in star wars.
the donald in kingdom hearts style.
hand-detailed prototypes of andrew bell's new zlicks sculpts.
more zlicks. now doused in petrol.
from the nano spor3 folks. super cute.
voltron kicks power ranger ass ANY DAY.
i forget where this guy is from. snapped a pic cuz the color and design are plenty slick.
dunno where he comes from either. he looks rather constipated.
again, not sure of these guys' origins. but dammit, way cute.
glow-in-the-dark unkl brand fellas.
i've been bad about getting designer names this year so i dunno about where this guy comes from. the needles in his pack are amusing. evil. pure evil.
the floating fat man with extremely detailed sores and burns.
blanka. check out his orange mane.
tim curry. with...or without make-up?!
at the end of the day ...
the con center approaching from marina park south. snapped this after the dear friends final fantasy concert.
deserted at night.
neon blue escalator.
i like the rings of lights.

friday - 15th ... second official con day

i remember this as the day when we were finally able to rush the official star wars booth without having to suffer through a loooooong line. somewhat surprising since it was friday (usually a big day for comic con) and the doors opened half an hour late (there was a huge crowd outside by the time they let us in). for a while, the dealers' room was pretty empty so i was able to snap pics of bruce campbell and ray park (just slip past them as if you're only walking past...then quick-snap with the camera...instantaneous free celeb pic!).

attended the star wars trivia game...yieah i lost stupendously. it was fun though. i'll probably be doing that again next year. they gave away something like 30 copies of galaxies. i wonder why.

the highlight of the day was the afternoon ray harryhausen king kong panel. an entire hour of The Man himself...witty, smart-ass, and gracious. i don't even know that much about the original king kong movie as i'm more a fan of his sinbad work...yet it was quite an entertaining hour. getting ray's sig afterwards was even better.

at trouz's suggestion, we went to the mira mesa barnes n noble for harry pooter midnight madness. got a free pair of harry glasses (so dorky!) and gaped at the mass of people who'd gathered for the wait. after we'd found a spot, i konked out (tired). we were actually somewhat afraid that there wouldn't be any copies for people who hadn't reserved but that didn't turn out to be a problem. though i didn't have much energy to say much besides looking at the massive crazies, this midnight thing is something i'll definitely have to do again the next time.

one of the best leia's i've yet seen. her hair matched perfectly. this scarecrow's cool only because cillian murphy was amazing in the role.
catching the bruce on the fly.
catching the bruce on the fly, take two.
i've yet to watch this movie.
snapped just because it's dreamfall.
the daily bugle model from a more legible angle.
a bizarre gathering. the guy with the fancy cam taking a pic calls to mind paparazzi taking snaps of celebrities.
catching ray park on the fly.
catching ray park on the fly, take two.
ray harryhausen: elderly but still packing the punches where it counts.
harryhausen demonstrating his legendary awesom-ness to a huge crowd of middle-aged geek-heads.
at the end of the day ...
midnight madness party for pooter book six. this was the line in front of me...
..the line in back of me...
...and the lines on the other side of the store.

saturday - 16th ... third official con day

the day of OSC. i practically flew to the booth where osc was scheduled to do signings...only to find a massive line in progress. so i waited, willingly, for over an hour. the goal? to ask osc to sign a new copy of ender's game for my, also new!, nephew in colorado (new nephew was actually named after andrew wiggin...how's that for fanboy). the hour spent waiting was fun as i chatted it up with the fans waiting in front and in back of me. blah blah blah. osc was super nice (despite having signed how many books for how long now?) and he gave me a big smile. so kudos to him for that.

revisited osc that afternoon at the science and storytelling panel. all the panelists were fun guys who dealt good writing advice with plenty of wise-assery. a non-stop hour of laughter. these are authors who have their head screwed on right and not floating about in the clouds.

dinner was planned by all to be at anthony's fish grotto. i forgot my cell phone at brian darth maul's house when we left in the morning, then seperated from the rest of the group, so i walked by myself from the con center down harbor drive to the restaurant. san diego's a great city for walking in the summer...i basically saw the ocean go from afternoon sun into waning sunset mode. gorgeous colors and reflections. the beach front street had a gazillion well-manicured spaces and the boardwalk was filled with random sculptures from local artists -- things you normally wouldn't see if you drove down harbor all the time.

dinner itself was fun chaos (more beer? deep fried cthulu? well dammit of course!). after dinner i zonked out at the house while the guys went out to get watered up. since i'd slept off the alcohol, i spent the night zipping through half-blood prince. which wasn't the plan originally...i was just gonna read a couple chapters and fall asleep. apparently the book was that good eh. ;)

real-live ketchup bottles. you know what's icky? the whisker bristles stickin' outta his chin.
the most excellent grevious costume.
view from the front. the costumer is actually hidden behind the cape and controls the limbs using poles.
catching billy dee on the fly.
catching billy dee on the fly, take two.
the fountain opposite the con center. i passed by it on my long walk to the restaurant for dinner.
a short pier and the ocean at not-yet-quite-sunset.
the restaurant on the water.
the star of india. arrrggg mateys!!
at the end of the day ...
not too bad a bill considering we were a party of ten.
the glowy sign at night. a most clever logo and lettering intergration design.

sunday - 17th ... last official con day

sundays are always pretty laid back as far as con going goes but we managed to make an interesting visit out of it nonetheless. met minru at the con center (i forget why), then hung out with ripbobington because we hadn't seen him all throughout this visit (he was volunteering). minru snapped a bajillion pics of cosplayers and we dragged each other around to various booths. i got my super-cute, original creatures cardboard drawing from andrew (thanks andrew!).

we had lunch with minru (in mira mesa?) then spent some time wandering around the mysterious galaxy bookstore (it's smaller than i remember). i accosted the card game store next door for ccg stuff from a game of thrones but they hadn't heard of it (boo!). apparently, it's super rare to get a hold of (why?!).

afterwards, we called it a day and then drove home.

a decent-sized crowd on sunday (though there was currently a double header at the nearby petco ballpark). the trolley tracks we had to walk across only a couple billion times.

cosplayers ...

the cool kids kick it up a notch.

alice cosplayer. not bloody enough but she's tall and real cute.
again with the coolness of the orange flightsuit and visor. that's the best anakin look alike i've yet seen. this foto, and all the rest following, were snapped by minru.
the fab lookin' anakin (he even got the mullet thing right!) with an equally impressive obi-wan cosplayer.
jedi wearing....blue robes. the midnight shade was rather pretty.
a great old obi-wan cosplayer. and stormtrooper. can never get enough of stormtroopers.
stargate, sg-1. duh!
three real pretty girls with pretty impressive costumes. i love the chun-li...and finally!, a rinoa that doesn't suck.

and just a bit more fun stuff ...

snippy-snapped by minru!

the really neat sci-fi booth setup. much cooler than last year's big purple pillary thing...though a bit more difficult to spot since it wasn't as tall.
doll of a froud fairy. she looks kinda freaky and too young for my tastes (i like my froud fairies crinkled and somewhat transluscent). still, a great idea!
somehow i missed seeing him in my billions of rounds around the star wars booth. neat lil guy.

the loot
these are the incredible find of preview night: mini figures of characters in the romance of the three kingdoms epic. they came in the surprise packaging style so i had no choice (none!) but to buy out the stock at the booth. about 35 bucks total. still, a really decent haul since there were two of cao cao (one painted, one not), a zhugeliang, and a couple other popular persons. i ended up giving all the figs to trouz cuz just the excitement of finding these babies was enough for me. check out the figs in a we're-out-exploring-the-great-lands-of-china! setup. okay fine dammit, they're just standing on a leather couch.
a collection of Small Stuff reaped from the trip: harry pooter frames from midnight madness party at barnes and nobles, squooshy thermal detonator found by minru, chibi yoda and r2 figs from the hasbro booth (they was free), and the devil smurf. THE DEVIL SMURF. and it's not just cuz he's pink and wears red underoos.
red m&m dressed as stormtrooper and yellow m&m in vader getup. because peanuts suck! then there's anakin and obi-wan disguised as lego keychains.
seven dolla oogie boogie and han in carbonite are from trouz. stargate: atlantis necklace thingie is from the sony/sci-fi booth and it's supposed to light up (stupid me still hasn't figured out how to turn it on yet). crystal ball thingie is a freebie narnia promo item minru snagged. and that's a crystal cast, antiqued d20 that was handed to me via margaret weis' very own hands.
vintage ketchup bottles from trouz (again!) and a domokun keychain i could not resist getting for myself.
domokun i initially bought for myself then decided to give to mom. because she's as much a teevee hound as he is.
jesus christos, this year's hotwheel exclusives (your choice of the silver batmobile with batman fig or something called, yieach!, purple passion), cost 20 dollars EACH. wtf people. even more stupid is that they sold these things only through raffle. ugh. i got two of the batman and both are for my friend.
this year's hasbro exclusive...holo leia tucked into an old leia-with-blaster blister pack. typical of hasbro to be such cheap fucks. she doesn't even come with r2 to complete the scene(!). i got two of these...one for a friend and the other i gave to minru.
the last impulse buy i made at this year's con. because feffy-roth is all that and this is a great fig sculpt.
vintage-style vader from trouz (again!!) and lava-reflective vader from rip-bob (he who rocks forever).
plo-kloon looks plain bizzaro with that giant arm. he was a freebie from hasbro along with the chibi yoda and r2 set. dark horse pin was courtesy of (who else?) the dark horse booth. i don't even read their stuff, eh. and the M-pire thing i included just cuz it's funny...it's the stand for the m&m vader and stormtrooper.
shotglass featuring...dun dun DUN...the monkey who's name is jennifer. i could've gotten endless free shots if i kept going back to the booth that was selling it but i never ate much throughout the weekend so i kept away from the alcohol. the wee tiny dice were 10 for a dolla and just too cute to not buy. the black die is made of some shiny metal material and i got it because it was, well, shiny and metal.
del ray was giving out hammered for free. his dark materials is actually an advanced galley (not yet in stores) so i got all excited about that -- particularly since phil pullman's dark materials trilogy is some delicious crazy plotting. i got jennifer government during the barnes and nobles pooter party. max barry has a wicked sense of humor, the title has my name, and nation states is a fabulous invention eh.
ran into sandra chang at her booth on thursday. had a great time chatting up with her about stuff (sypher, more akemi, yolk) and flipping through that one rather interesting foot fetish comic (ha!). i've liked her akemi strips back when they were first published in the yolk mags and it's nice to know that she's planning to refurb the whole thing soon. yay!
sandra's sig and self-portrait on the akemi #1 issue i bought.
so i said i was not going to splurge and buy art stuff like i did last year (too expensive and no where to hang the stuff!). but i couldn't resist leaving donato's booth without picking something up. this is his artbook for 2005.
donato had a huge print of this displayed in front of his booth. it's boromir and it's totally cool.
i finally got a republicans for voldy bumper sticker to keep for myself. the creatures stickie was a freebie from andrew bell (he's just such a cool guy). and yieah, that's ray harryhausen's sig...getting that was the highlight of the entire con for me.
yay! i got andrew's new artbook!! it's one of the major reasons i wanted to attend con this year. just so i can buy it in person...
...and ask andrew to do a self-portrait. something not completely creature-y for once.
not that i skipped out on a chance to get yet another original creatures work from meester bell. the gang is adorable. a mite bloodthirsty...but hey. so's my friend's pet goldfish.
never usually that much into t-shirts. but this thing is hot-pink and it's got a sparkly vader on it.
no, not a tie-fighter/interceptor. it's a deep space defensive attack module rendered in 8-bit. uh...yieah.
donald rocks and this year the best carry bags were from the disney booth. these babies held out amid much banging and shoving through the crowds and were nicely spaced to hold a shiz load of loot.

oh but wait ... there are still WOOKIE COOKIES waiting for you ...

cam angles are a bit bizarre but you get the point: gingerbread wookies mmmkay. made by trouz and jim (where an entire night was spent amid icing and dough). rancor cookie is definitely some sorta wonky cuteness and yieah, that's a fricken super star destroyer. personalized cookies include silvara, charlie brown, and the one with a penis.

for the record, the cookies were very well made. still chewy even five days afterwards!
